Manteca standoff ends after suspect taken into custody

MANTECA, CA - A man who crashed into a propane tank and then barricaded himself inside a propane tank truck in Manteca was taken into custody Wednesday night.

Manteca police officer Jodie Estarziau said the man drove his car into a propane tank on Austin Road and 99 Frontage Road around 6:30 p.m. which exploded.

When officers arrived at the scene, they found a victim who was suffering from a non-life threatening gunshot wound. Officers then confronted the suspected gunman. The suspect exchanged fire with officers and got away from authorities. Estarziau said officers were not hurt by the gunfire.

The man ended up barricading himself inside of a Van Unen Propane truck, which is parked Austin Road and Highway 99, Estarziau said.

Multiple agencies responded to the incident. SWAT set up a staging area at the Crossroads Church at 1505 Moffat Boulevard and a helicopter circled over the area.

Manteca streetlights loved, loathed

MANTECA, CA - New, energy-efficient streetlights have some fuming and others enthralled in the Central Valley city of Manteca.

"I like them. They just seem a lot brighter. I don't know, I just like them," laughed Manteca resident Netty Perez, as she surveyed a street filled with bright, new white street lights.

The new lights will save the city over $150,000 a year in energy costs by using less electricity and in rebates from Pacific Gas and Electric.

"We've heard complaints from people who say they're too bright. We've heard complaints from people who think they're not bright enough," Manteca Deputy Public Works Director Jim Stone said.

The city got a grant from the Federal Department of Energy to help defray the cost, meaning the city had to stick with federal efficiency guidelines and other mandates.

Was fire at Big Bear cabin intentional?

STOCKTON, CA - Police radio traffic from Southern California where Christopher Dorner was barricaded in a Big Bear cabin has some believing the fire at the cabin was set intentionally.

"Go ahead with the plan with the burners," said one officer working the incident Tuesday on police radio.

By Tuesday night, the cabin eventually burned to the ground.

Manteca police hostage negotiator Rex Osborn disputed the possibility that fire was intentional.

"Never have I been to a training where they say fires is an option to force them out," Osborn said. "We can control how we place tactical people, and how we handle negotiations. You start a fire, you have no control."

Police search for driver responsible in hit and run

TRACY - The police department is asking for help from the public for information regarding hit and run collision that killed a man earlier this month.

The collision occurred on Wednesday, February 6th on Schulte Rd. near Lauriana Ln. around 8:45 p.m. A car hit a bicyclist and drove away from the scene.

The rider, a 27 year old Tracy man, died at a local hospital.

The Tracy Police Department is hoping that someone may have more information that will help in locating the vehicle involved.

The car is described as a dark colored, shiny, 90's model sedan with tinted windows, loud exhaust, fog lights and possibly front end damage.

Police arrest man suspected of drug, firearm possession

MANTECA, CA - Police arrested a man in connection to selling drugs and possession of firearms after a traffic stop Wednesday.

Shawn Strauss, 19, of Manteca was pulled over by the Manteca Police Gang Suppression Unit near the intersection of Pajaro Avenue and Range Court, police said.

During the stop, officers noticed marijuana in plain sight in the car; officers then searched the car and found 1 pound of pot, items used to make drugs, many prescription pills, including Oxycodone, Hydrocodone and miscellaneous psych medication. Police said they also found a .38 caliber revolver.

Police then arrested Strauss.

Officers then followed up the investigation at Strauss's home where they found 700 ecstasy pills, three-quarters-of- a-pound of pot, cocaine and three handguns, one of which was reported stolen, police said.

Roseville man arraigned for Facebook post

MANTECA, CA - A Roseville taxicab driver was arraigned Friday in a Manteca courtroom, accused of making terrorist threats on a Manteca police officer; his attorney plans to argue freedom of speech.

Dominic Aguilar was arrested for a post on the Justice for Ernesto Duenez Jr. Facebook page. It read, "50 rounds to your dome, Moody." Officer James Moody is the officer who fatally shot parolee Duenez in June 2011. Aguilar is charged with terrorist threats and resisting arrest.

"It didn't say anything like 'I will put 50 rounds to your dome,' or 'I'm going to,'" Aguilar's girlfriend Aimee Jeffers said. "He doesn't even own any weapons."

Manteca police arrest four suspects for providing alcohol to minors

Manteca, CA - Agents from the California Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC) and the Manteca Police Department arrested four suspects on January 4, 2013 for furnishing alcoholic beverages to minors. The operation was conducted in the general vicinity of Manteca.

ABC agents and local law enforcement conducted a program called a Decoy Shoulder Tap Operation which targets adults who purchase alcohol for people less than 21 years of age. Under the program, a minor under the direct supervision of a peace officer will stand outside a liquor or convenience store and ask patrons to buy them alcohol. The minor indicates in some way he or she is underage and cannot purchase the alcohol.
