Son charged in Manteca mother's murder | Crime

STOCKTON, CA -  Dawson McGehee, the man accused of murdering his mother on Halloween, was arraigned in a Stockton court Thursday afternoon.

McGehee was clearly unsettled during the court hearing, swaying and moving his arms, appearing to struggle to focus on people or discussions going on around him.

Manteca police said McGehee killed his mother Monday afternoon or evening, stabbing her multiple times.  He was arrested several hours later, also in Manteca.

After the court hearing, San Joaquin County prosecutor Sherri Adams addressed the issue of McGehee being able to handle the trial process.

"If he's not in control, we can assure you the court system will make sure he's not prosecuted.  We only prosecute people who are competent," said Adams.

Adams didn't have any information about McGehee's apparent problems.  Manteca police and San Joaquin County sheriff's officials said they're prohibited by privacy rules from discussing a person's health issues.
